The pillars either side of the gate contain radiation monitors to automatically check vehicles leaving the site for contamination. If the monitors are tripped, a klaxon sounds and alarms ring in the control room. The monitors are sensitive enough to detect the naturally occurring radioactivity in such materials as granite chips (although it would probably take a truckload of such low-level material to set off the detector).
