This equipment is used for treating brain tumours, or other deep-seated cancers. A beam of pions is directed to the tumour. The half-life of the particles and their speed is controlled so that they decay at the tumour site without inflicting a large dose of radiation to the patient's skin and skull, which would happen with conventional radiation treatment.
